Johann Gottfried Herder

Together with Edmund Burke is indicated by Zeev Sternell as one of the founders of culture antilluministica. Johann Gottfried Herder was founded in 1744, Mohrungen, in East Prussia. He died in 1803. It was a great traveler. In 1762, at age 18, he left his native village of 2,000 souls, most never to return, even to review the parents. He studied in Königsberg, where he was a student of Kant. He became friends with Johann Georg Hamann who instilled the principle of the primacy of reason over feeling. In 1764 became a Lutheran pastor who married three years after Caroline Flachsland known in Darmstadt. On the recommendation of Goethe got the job of general superintendent of the clergy at Weimar. In 1788 he traveled to Italy where he visited Rome, Naples, Florence, Venice. He returned to Weimar in June 1789 in Weimar, where he remained until his death in 1803.
